Human Trafficking

Illustrated Police News May 2nd 1885. A series of drawings illlustrating trafficking. It begins with a job application for a barmaid job on the continent, a warning on board a steamer, arrival at a 'hotel,' despair, the intervention of the police and restoration to their friends.

I’ve been reading reports about human trafficking. One from 1880 and one from the UK Home Office in 2023. The same techniques are employed to entrap victims and control them once they have them. Exactly the same.

One technique is the fake boyfriend or ‘loverboy’ model where the trafficker pretends to love the victim and suggests they run away together.

Or they recruit the victim to a fake legitimate job and then once they arrive force them to work illegally.

It’s so cruel – making people think something great is going to happen when really it is the opposite. It also means the victim is likely to blame themselves.

Here’s some great charities working in this area:

ICMEC – The International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children

The Snowdrop Project – Helping victims of modern slavery in South Yorkshire
